Talk about academic excellence! This month’s sister spotlight is shining bright on Maritza González from Line 4, Fall 2007. She is our current standing Chapter Secretary and a proud deuce! To help position herself where she is today, Maritza took a cue from her dreams and literally followed her dreams. She kept having a recurring “bad dream” for weeks and it finally led her to apply for graduate school. This decision changed her life and provided her with academic and professional opportunities. It also gave her the opportunity to meet incredible professors and helped her grow close to her beautiful line sisters. Maritza is truly a universal woman, on the go and very involved within our community. She is on track to receive her PhD/Doctorate degree and has successfully defended her dissertation proposal. She will be conducting a comparative case study across two schools within Maryland upon IRB approval. For this case study, she will conduct interviews with students who are children of Salvadoran immigrants as well as their parents, teachers, administrators, parent liaisons and community representatives. She now works as a Research Assistant for a multi-site longitudinal study. Wait … hold your breath because we’re not done. Most recently, Maritza has been actively lobbying for support for the Maryland "DREAM” Act bill in College Park, Baltimore and Annapolis. She’s also been working on various committees at the University of Maryland, College Park and is a reviewer for a scholarship for Hispanic students. Among her many accomplishments, Maritza was appointed last semester for an education based taskforce by Governor O’Malley. She hopes to one day work with educational initiatives/policies targeting Latino/a students particularly in the realms of language, parent engagement, and advocacy. Or she may go the teaching route and become a professor. What’s a girl to do after pouring her energy into family/friends, studies and her chapter? Music of course! She enjoys listening to music, dancing and attending concerts and plays. Maritza’s five most important things in life are: God, Family, Friends, Work/Education, and Hope. By the end of this summer, she will be a proud godmother of four beautiful children. Congratulations Maritza for all your accomplishments! We wish our sister the best and the sky’s the limit!
