Sister Spotlight

We would like to announce our new bi-monthly feature called Sister Spotlight.  In an effort to learn more about the incredible women that make up Alpha Delta Graduate Chapter, we will be searching far and near to catch up with ALL our chapter sisters and give them a special place on our website to inform us about their lives.  What’s new?  What don’t we already know about you?  Have any announcements?

Be on the look out for the next post. The
Sister Spotlight might shine on you!

Talk about academic excellence! This month’s sister spotlight is shining bright on
Maritza González from Line 4, Fall 2007.  She is our current standing Chapter Secretary and a proud deuce!  To help position herself where she is today, Maritza took a cue from her dreams and literally followed her dreams.  She kept having a recurring “bad dream” for weeks and it finally led her to apply for graduate school.  This decision changed her life and provided her with academic and professional opportunities.  It also gave her the opportunity to meet incredible professors and helped her grow close to her beautiful line sisters.

Maritza is truly a universal woman, on the go and very involved within our community.  She is on track to receive her PhD/Doctorate degree and has successfully defended her dissertation proposal.
She will be conducting a comparative case study across two schools within Maryland upon IRB approval.  For this case study, she will conduct interviews with students who are children of Salvadoran immigrants as well as their parents, teachers, administrators, parent liaisons and community representatives.  She now works as a Research Assistant for a multi-site longitudinal study.

Wait … hold your breath because we’re not done.  Most recently, Maritza has been actively lobbying for support for the Maryland "DREAM” Act bill in College Park, Baltimore and Annapolis.  She’s also been working on various committees at the University of Maryland, College Park and is a reviewer for a scholarship for Hispanic students.  Among her many accomplishments, Maritza was appointed last semester for an education based taskforce by Governor O’Malley. She hopes to one day work with educational initiatives/policies targeting Latino/a students particularly in the realms of language, parent engagement, and advocacy.  Or she may go the teaching route and become a professor.

What’s a girl to do after pouring her energy into family/friends, studies and her chapter? Music of course! She enjoys listening to music, dancing and attending concerts and plays.  Maritza’s five most important things in life are: God, Family, Friends, Work/Education, and Hope.

By the end of this summer, she will be a proud godmother of four beautiful children.  Congratulations Maritza for all your accomplishments! We wish our sister the best and the sky’s the limit!

This month’s sister spotlight finds itself spotlighting Line 2 -- Spring 2004!  Angie Torres-Reid hails from the “Five Daughters of Destiny.” These days, Angie is immersed in her career and family.  Angie’s passion in healthcare has led her to a career as a Network Manager in the healthcare business.  If there is one thing Angie could teach others it would be to understand the opportunities that we, but especially Latinos, have with healthcare.  Latinos have so many options with healthcare that they can really take advantage of and Angie would love to pass that message along to all. Angie lists God, family & friends, extended family in other cities and El Salvador, her career and helping others as the five most important things in her life. When asked, what has been the best thing that has happened to her, Angie was quick to reply: her daughter. Angie feels like it was just yesterday that she had her daughter, Natalia. But it’s been 3 years and she enjoys every second.

Angie hasn’t always followed the rules.  She remembers way back when in high school she did what she wanted.  After being shut down by her parents when she asked about a trip to NY, Angie decided to go anyway.  Needless to say she had a blast but definitely had to face the fury when she returned home.  Now as a mother she hopes her child might be one of those kids who do as they’re told!

Here’s to Angie … hope you find yourself vacationing in Spain sometime soon!

Congratulations to Monique Cabellos for receiving the Chapter Affirmation Book this past month!  Monique was given the honors by Sue Pared for being instrumental in the latest string of fund-raising events.  As a sister, she has taken on the task of chapter treasurer but we all know that she is involved in every aspect of the chapter.  She created and implemented our very first chapter budget.  She credits LTA for helping her learn more about herself personally and professionally.  In her personal life Monique has lots to be thankful for. Her most important things in life are; family, friends, love, laughter, and passion for her career.  For those that might not know, Monique is a  Bilingual Speech Language Pathologist and was inspired to follow this career very early on. She was born with a cleft palate which was corrected when she was a baby and as a result had to receive speech therapy.  Like a true gold, we’re sure she meticulously plotted this career move from those very early toddler years!
